With a new year comes a lot of new promises. One of my least favorite traditions of the new year is the diet promise.

New Year New You!
Lose the belly fat fast!
You’ve heard them all. The promises of losing weight fast with another fad diet.
In reality losing weight fast often comes with regaining weight fast and sometimes ending up heavier than we were in the first place.
Fad diets don’t promote habits that are sustainable or that align with most people’s values and that’s why they aren’t a long term solution. These promises are centered around insecurity and looking a certain way. This has little to do with health at all.
Building a foundation of knowledge around health, what it means to curate it and why you should do it is a much more effective approach.
Living a healthy lifestyle is about so much more than losing weight! Maintaining a healthy weight is just one component of health. Making “healthy” choices has a ripple effect on our lives.
Managing anxiety and stress
Supporting true ethical farming practices
Puts money into our own community by buying local
Maintains muscle for future mobility
Less burden on health care
Free from having to use pills for symptoms
Modeling sustainable health behaviors for future generations
Demonstrating values that make a positive impact on others.
If you’re thinking about starting a diet this week think about living by a few new principles instead.
Eat food for its nutritional content.
Read something about where your food comes from each day.
Prioritize protein early in the day.
Track your food with a counter.
Living a healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to be time consuming. We make better choices just by being aware.
